Ring through the Brent de l’Art canyon

Brent de l'Art ring: the Grand Canyon of the Prealps

In today's hike we will take you to discover a jewel of nature, hidden in the Belluno mountains: the Brent de L'Art. It is a canyon that was created over thousands of years by the erosion of a rocky gorge in a deep and narrow valley (called "Brent" in the local dialect) by the Ardo (in dialect "Art") stream, a tributary of the Piave River, which originates in Belluno, near the Schiara springs.

The itinerary: ring through the Brent de l'Art canyon

The start of our itinerary is located at the small village of Sant’Antonio di Tortal. You can comfortably leave your car in the meadow in front of the village sports field, taking the small dirt road that, from the cemetery, bears the signs for “Brent de l’Art.

From here you will walk to a wide dirt road that, after passing a group of private houses, opens into a meadow, giving you a magnificent view of the Belluno Dolomites. After a short stretch, the road becomes narrower and narrower and enters more and more into the vegetation, until it turns into a path with wooden steps that descends rapidly, allowing us to reach the point of interest of our hike: the Brent de l’Art canyon. Our advice is to go into the discovery of this spectacle of nature, exploring it from the inside, obviously equipping yourself with non-slip and possibly waterproof shoes.

After photographing and admiring the Canyon, with its peculiar colors of red and brownish, given respectively by iron oxide sediments and cemented limestone sands, we walk back into the forest, continuing our loop trail around the Brent de l’Art canyon. We follow the course of the stream, until we cross it at a point where the water is low; we then continue, aided by the signs, along the path with a slight slope, accompanied by the coolness of the trees and the peace of the forest.

Following the signs for Sant’Antonio di Tortal, we walk toward the parking lot, first skirting a dwelling with a vegetable garden and a drinking fountain, nestled in a cool grassy clearing; we then cross the stream at several points, at a series of small bridges, until we reach another dwelling from which the view opens to the surrounding mountains. After skirting the latter we take a new path through the woods, until we reach again the road we had intercepted on the outward journey and, from here, the parking lot.
